Osor
One of the oldest towns on the Adriatic, a stone open-air museum on the bridge between Cres and Lošinj.
The destination
Osor is a unique historic town located at the meeting point of the islands of Cres and Lošinj, where thousands of years of history, culture and natural beauty come together. Walking through its charming stone streets feels like visiting an open-air museum. Around every corner you will discover traces of ancient civilisations, beautiful churches, sculptures and remarkable historical buildings.
The town's best-known landmark is its bridge connecting the two islands, attracting visitors every day. Osor is also renowned for its rich cultural heritage, summer music festivals and numerous sculptures that decorate its streets and squares.
What to see
Today the whole town of Osor is really an open-air museum, and these are the sights not to miss:
A sea passage (Cavata, Cavanella) deepened in the western part of the town, the channel separating Cres and Lošinj.
The site of a now filled-in channel on the eastern side of town, believed to have once served harbour traffic.
The preserved walls bear witness to the town's former power and extent.
The palace built by Bishop Marko Nigris.
A 15th-century cathedral with an 18th-century bell tower, the heart of the old town.
The historic town hall, today home to the archaeological museum.
Venetian lions carved into the town's stone.
"Sculpture and Music", works by Croatia's most renowned sculptors: Meštrović, Kršinić, Rosandić, Radauš.
Exhibitions of paintings and drawings around the old town in the summer months.
In summer Osor becomes a unique stage rich in cultural events, most notably the Osor Music Evenings, held since 1976, and the Evening of Klapa Singing.
Across the bridge
The swing bridge over the Osor channel opens twice a day, at 9:00 and 17:00, letting boats through a narrow passage about four metres deep. It carries 20 tonnes, and only one boat passes through the channel at a time, with priority given to vessels arriving from the south.
Our camp is on the other side of that bridge. Hence the name.
